Frequently Asked Questions
Note: Inspiration desktop versions prior to 7.5a lack the ability to work with Inspiration for Palm OS documents. If you own Inspiration 7 a free update to 7.6 is available here. Otherwise you can purchase the upgrade to Inspiration 8 here.
Import A:Select the text, then copy and paste it into your Inspiration for Palm OS document.
Export A:Inspiration for Palm OS documents can be transferred to AlphaWord®, Memo Pad, WordSmith and Word To Go.
A:To transfer the Outline View of your Inspiration for Palm OS document, choose Transfer To from the File menu. In the Transfer To dialog, choose the application to which you would like to transfer from the Application drop-down menu. Tap on Transfer to perform the transfer. The chosen application will display with your transferred outline as the open document.
Handheld / Desktop Transfer A:Be sure you have Inspiration 7.5a or higher. Begin by opening the Inspiration document with Inspiration. On the File menu, choose Handheld, then Save for Sync. Choose the handheld name for which you would like this document to be available, then click Save. During the next HotSync, the document will be transferred to the selected handheld profile.
Click here for a PDF that details this process.
A:Be sure you have Inspiration 7.5a or higher. Begin by saving the document on your Palm device. Next, HotSync the Palm to your computer. After the HotSync is complete, start Inspiration. On the File menu, choose Handheld, then Open from Sync. In the window that appears, open the folder that corresponds to your handheld's name or user profile. Inside that folder, you will find a list of your available Inspiration for Palm OS files. Select the one you want, then click Open.
A:By default, documents moved from the Palm device to a desktop computer are saved in a folder named for your handheld's device ID in one of the following folders:
Windows 2K, XP
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Inspiration Handhelds
Windows 98, ME
C:\Windows\All Users\Documents\Inspiration Handhelds
Macintosh
Macintosh HD: Users: Shared: Inspiration Handhelds (Mac)
However, you can easily change that default behavior by moving the Inspiration Handhelds folder--or a subfolder with a particular device name-- to anywhere you have access and then creating a shortcut (Windows) or alias (Mac) with the exact same name in the original location.
For example, suppose you wanted to save your documents on a server instead of a workstation. Suppose, too, that your device name is "Firefly". First, move the Firefly folder from the Inspiration Handhelds folder to a location on the server to which you as a user have full access, including write and delete access. Next, create a shortcut or alias for that folder with the name "Firefly"--the shortcut/alias name must be exactly the same as the original for this to work--and place it in the Inspiration Handhelds folder from which you moved the original folder. That's it--the next time you perform a HotSync, the documents moved from your handheld will automatically be saved in the "Firefly" folder on the server. Likewise, when you choose Save for Sync in the desktop version of Inspiration, the documents will also be saved to the "Firefly" folder on the server, where they will be available for moving to your handheld during the next HotSync operation. This is especially useful for situations in which a handheld user is performing a HotSync to more than one computer and would like to gain access to her documents from any workstation for which that HotSync process is set up.
The example above refers to a server, but a network is definitely not required: you can also use this feature to redirect documents moved during a HotSync to any location on the same PC or Macintosh computer. Just remember, the user trying to access that new location must have full permission to read, write, and delete from it (that's why the default location is initially set to "all users" or "shared").
A:Begin by opening the Kidspiration document in Kidspiration 2.1 on the desktop computer. On the File menu, choose “Send to Handheld.” In the window that appears, choose the handheld or handhelds for which you would like this document to be available, then click “Save.” The document will be transferred the next time you sync the handheld or handhelds to the desktop computer.
Click here for a PDF that details this process.
A:In the past, Inspiration was able to create all of the Handheld user folders necessary to use this feature before syncing a device. With the Intel-native version, the user must install Inspiration for Palm and sync any device on the machine in question. This will cause user folders for all users on that machine to be created.
The key here is to cause the Inspiration conduit to be activated at least once on each machine that needs to sync with the desktop application before using the "Save for Sync" feature.
Installation/Setup A:On handhelds that run Palm OS 5 or higher, Inspiration for Palm will run in 'hi-res' mode (320x320 resolution). For older versions of the Palm OS, Inspiration for Palm will run in low-res mode (160x160 resolution).
If your handheld runs a version of the Palm OS that is older than Palm OS 5, but your handheld is capable of forcing applications to run in hi-res, for example, the Handera 330, please make sure to run Inspiration for Palm as a low-res application.
A:Please read our Inspiration for Palm OS volume license install instructions that came with your volume license materials. Also, a PDF copy of it can be found here.
A: You can register your trial through our online store, or through Handango. Please note that you will need to be aware of your Palm's device name to obtain a valid registration code. To see that name, please go to the Home screen on your Palm device. Next, tap "HotSync", which should appear when you are viewing the "All" category of applications. Once you have tapped on HotSync, you should see your device's name in the top right corner.
A:Your registration code is based on your handheld's device name. To see that name, please go to the Home screen on your Palm device. Next, tap "HotSync", which should appear when you are viewing the "All" category of applications. Once you have tapped on HotSync, you should see your device's name in the top right corner. If your device's current name is different than the one you used when purchasing your license, the registration code will not work.
A:To install the part of Inspiration for Palm OS that talks to the desktop version of Inspiration, the installer needs special access to the part of your system that holds the other Palm conduits. This often is password-protected. Simply enter the computer administrator's password, (or your password if you are the only user on this computer), when prompted to complete the install.
A:If you registered your copy of the trial by purchasing a registration code, begin by downloading the 30-day trial of Inspiration for Palm OS. After you have downloaded it, please enter the registration code you received when you purchased by choosing "Register" from the Options menu, or when prompted on launch if the trial period has expired.
A:Please contact techsupport to receive your registration code.
A:Though our standard Macintosh installer only supports systems running OS X, there are two ways to get Inspiration on your handheld device even if you are running an earlier Macintosh operating system. First, you can ask someone who already has Inspiration to beam it to you. Secondly, you can install the application using the file inspiration.prc, which can be downloaded here. To install, double-click inspiration.prc and then perform a HotSync operation. Inspiration for Palm OS will then be installed on your handheld device. Using either method, the installed application will be a 30-day trial version; to register, please visit the Inspiration online store.
A:If you registered your already-installed trial copy and received a registration code from us, please use the "Register" command that is found under the Options menu on your handheld to enter your registration code. Alternately, if your trial has already expired, you may be prompted to Register when you launch the trial of Inspiration for Palm OS. Entering the registration code where indicated will convert your trial into a full version.
If you purchased via Handango, please use the installer you downloaded to install Inspiration for Palm OS. To convert it into the full version, please use the "Register" command that is found under the Options menu to enter the registration code you received with your purchase.
If you purchased a boxed copy of Inspiration for Palm OS, please use the full installer you received on the included install CD to install your full copy of Inspiration for Palm OS via your desktop computer. Begin by double-clicking on the Inspiration for Palm OS Install icon. You will be asked to enter your serial number during the install process on your desktop computer.
Usage A:The Symbol Properties button in the bottom toolbar can be used to change the appearance of the selected symbol. It can also be used to set the new default symbol for the document. To use, tap on the bottom toolbar button that looks like three differently-shaped symbols stacked on top of each other. From the menu that displays, choose a symbol shape for the currently selected symbol. You can also choose "Symbol Properties" to set the symbol defaults. These defaults will apply to all new symbols added to this document.
A:To hide the top menu bar and the bottom toolbar, tap on the small right-facing triangle that is found in the bottom right corner of the Inspiration for Palm OS interface. To show the tools, tap once more on that triangle, which will be pointing towards the left.
A:Begin by closing any open document. The Inspiration for Palm OS Starter Screen displays. On that screen, tap Delete. On the next screen, you'll see a list of saved documents, as well as the list of templates. Tap once on a document to select it, tap Delete, then tap Delete again in the confirmation dialog. When finished, tap Done.
A:When you choose to save the first time, you will see a window that allows you to set the name of the document, the author, the password (optional) and the format you wish to use when saving. To change from the default Document format, tap on the Format menu and choose Template. Tap Save to save the document as a template. If you wish to save a previously-saved document as a template, please choose Save As from the File menu.
A:If both devices have an infrared port, you can "beam" a document to someone who has Inspiration for Palm OS. Tap on the File menu, then tap Beam. A window listing saved documents and templates displays. Tap once on the document you want to beam, then tap the Beam button. Select your beaming option (if a choice is available), then beam the document to the other device as you would beam any other file. Alternately, from the Inspiration for Palm OS Starter Screen, simply tap on the Beam button to reach the document list directly.
