Since there are so many types of poetry that students aren't even aware of, a "Poetry Zoo" activity would be just the way to introduce them to these new "creatures." Use this chart to introduce each type of poetry. Provide the students with a chart that includes lines next to each type for them to take notes. It would be a fun bulletin board theme to follow with the creatures displayed with student's work in each style. Putting a face to a name helps you to remember, -they will definitely have unique faces to put with each style of poetry. You may wish to create your own graphics so that they give more hints to the criteria of each style. That way they will be of even greater help to the students as a memory tool.
