
This InspireData database can be used with middle school and high school students to meet standards in data collection, data representation and data interpretation. Students seem more motivated to manipulate and analyze data that has been collected about people they know. Open the database Body Proportions: InspireData Starter Screen>Databases>Science>Body Proportions. If time allows, have student conduct the Body Proportions activity and collect their data in the Database Template. Otherwise have students use the Sample Data. Have students create a plot to answer each question below . Plots in the attached file can be used as an exemplar for the Sample Data or as a group discussion activity.
QUESTIONS: • What is the comparison between height and arm span? How many students have a height and arm span equal to or over 60 inches?
• How many females have a height and arm span equal to or over 60 inches?
• How many males and females have an average foot length? What is the mean for foot length for females and males?
• What are the mean and median hand lengths for males and for females? How many people have larger than average hands?
• Is there a correlation between height and arm span? Is the correlation strong? Explain.
