This Inspiration lesson plan focuses the parts of a circle. It can be used as a follow up activity or assessment after the following lesson plan:
Lesson Length: 50 minutes
Unit Title: Knowledge of Geometry & Knowledge of Measurement
Instructional Goals
-Analyze Geometric Relationships and Measurement Tools
Objectives
-Identify and compare the relationship between parts of a circle
-Select and use appropriate tools and units
-Measure in customary and metric unit
Rationale
- The students will be using various materials to practice measuring circumference and diameter. They will use this data and apply the formula to discover pie. As part of the curriculum, students are required to learn about circumference, diameter, and radius. The standards require the students to evaluate the relationship between the parts of a circle to learn about pie.
Content
-The students will be able to define circumference, radius, and diameter
-The students will understand and memorize the formula C=d*p (circumference=diameter x pie).
-The students will know how to measure objects using a string and ruler.
-They will use different units of measurements (ex: cm, m, inches).
Materials
-Pieces of string, approximately 48" long
-Circular objects to be measured
-Apple Pi activity sheet
- (Optional) Projector for computer-Circle Ratios Applet
- Calculators
- Rulers
