Dr. Richard Wyman of the California University of Pennsylvania stated during a session at the National Council for the Social Studies annual conference in 2006 that research indicates that analyzing photographs engages students and helps them “improve analytical and perceptual skills,” “distinguish between fact and opinion,” “realize the value of historical photographs as primary sources of historical information” and “understand the importance of the photographer's influence and point of view on the finished photograph.”
